How to find things quickly on
this page:
Use the Edit Menu at the top of this screen.
Click on Find. Type in the term you want, and click OK. If it is on this page, it will
highlight it for you.

You are at this page if you wanted to learn more about Internet terms,
such as URL or search engine or browser.
Bookmark or Favorite-
Just like using a piece of paper to keep your place in a book, you can remember a place
you like on the Internet. You use the Bookmark menu at the top of the page (click on it,
and click on Add Bookmark).
Browser - a computer
program that lets you look at the Internet (such as Netscape or Microsoft Explorer).
Download - this means
to move a file from another computer to yours. Always be careful and ask someone before
you download, because you can get a nasty virus. Here at Squires you may not download
anything.
Homepage - this is a
page that is the first one for each Internet site. Sometimes a site has many pages, and
the Homepage is its introduction to the world. Our homepage is: http://www.squires.fayette.k12.ky.us/
Hyperlink - this is a blue, underlined word. When you move your mouse over this word, the
arrow turns into a little hand. If you click, you will go to another place on the
Internet. Sometimes hyperlinks are also under pictures (which Internet geeks call icons or
graphics or clipart).
Internet - a
collection (network) of computers that are linked together and can talk together from all
over the world.
Keywords - words you
can type into a search engine that help pinpoint exactly what you want (such as
"bears habitat" to help you find out about where bears live).
Location box - this
is the white empty box at the top of your screen. In this box you can type a URL (Internet
address), press Enter on your keyboard, and Netscape will take you to that place.
Menu bar - this is
the line of words at the top of your screen such as, File, Edit, View, Go, Bookmark, and
so on. Each one of these words has a list of words underneath that are helpful.
Search engine - an
Internet program that helps you find information by using keywords. A good one for kids is
Yahooligans.
Titlebar - at the
very top of the screen, the title of the page you are currently looking at is printed - so
you always know where you are on the Internet.
Toolbar - this is the
bar of buttons at the top of the page that help you quickly do things such as (in
Netscape):
| Back - go back one page |
Forward - go forward one page |
Print - print a page |
| Home - go to the page where you
started |
Reload - load the same page you
are on right now |
Stop - stop loading a page (stop
sign will turn from red to gray) |
URL -
an address to somewhere on the Internet. It stands for Uniform Resource Locator.
Virus - a destructive
computer program that mean people write. These are very dangerous and can make a mess out
of your computer. It is easy to catch a virus from someone else's computer. Do not
download files from other computers to ours at school.
